No. 4 – Carpinus (Hornbeam)
The Carpinus, or Hornbeam, is admired for its strength and adaptability. A native of Europe, it has been used for centuries in hedging, avenues, and formal gardens thanks to its dense foliage and ability to be shaped.
Hornbeam carries symbolism of resilience and perseverance, reflected in its very name — “horn” for strength and “beam” for tree. In traditional uses, its tough wood made excellent tools and furniture.
For Natural Green clients, Carpinus is valued for versatility. It can be trained into pleached screens, neat pyramids, or elegant standalone specimens. Its fresh green leaves in spring mature into golden autumn tones, bringing subtle seasonality without being overpowering.
Designers often use Hornbeam for structure and privacy — a living architectural element that defines spaces. Faux versions allow this to be achieved instantly, indoors or out.
Whether softening the edges of a terrace or framing a corporate reception, Carpinus brings both practicality and understated beauty — making it a staple in many projects.
